Jerod Dale Nunley (born 1996) is a up-and-coming composer of classical and contemporary music. He began his music journey between the ages of 4 and 5 years old, when he got his first drumset. It was always an enjoyable time playing his drums as well as watching and listening to his father play drums. In fifth grade, Jerod joined beginning band with a percussion kit that contained a rubber drum pad and a bell set. It was off to the races from there. He enjoyed doodling little music exercises in a manuscript book. As he grew older, his band directors Mr. Dennis Lawrence and Mr. Fred Burazer helped form him into an exceptional musician. Jerod learned about Noteflight, a free music writing website, where he kept experimenting with different notations and harmonies. In 2014, he auditioned for the University of Akron School of Music, where he was accepted into their Percussion Studio. Under the tutelage of Dr. Larry Snider and Mr. Matt Dudack, Jerod learned a lot more about the world of percussion, and in 2016, he fully realized his love for composing music and music theory. As he continued to learn about music history, both from western and African perspectives, it helped mold the type of music he loved. He played in many ensembles, including Marching Band, Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, Steel Drum Band, New Music Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, African Ensemble, and more.
His first work that was performed, by Jerod himself, was the piano solo Disconnected in 2017, played in front of peers at UA. Comments received by peers likened the piece to sounding "like Claude Debussy". His first officially published piece was The Intrigue (2017) on MauMauMusic's website (link in BUY MUSIC), which is a solo for Tenor Steelpan, originally written for his Pan Arranging class with Mr. Dudack. In 2018-2022, Jerod also volunteered as a Percussion Instructor for Buckeye Local Schools in Ashtabula, OH under the direction of Mrs. Connie Sommers. He gained a deep appreciation of the education side of music during that time. Since then, he has been consistently working on new music with a hiatus from 2022-2024 due to life changes.Â
Currently, Jerod lives with his wife, Cindy, in Indianapolis, IN and is looking to continue his writing and his studies. Stay tuned for more music!
